How to Spend $100 Million on Broken Newark Schools
By CHRIS GLORIOSO wpix.com 5:58 p.m. EDT, October 13, 2010
NEWARK (WPIX) — Parents, teachers, union leaders, and school administrators filed into Newark's West Side High School Wednesday to begin the thorny process of deciding how to divide a sizable gift promised by billionaire Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg.
The $100 million dollar donation can be used for anything from charter schools to new building construction. The only stipulation Zuckerberg placed on the gift is a requirement that Mayor Cory Booker raise an additional $100 million in matching grants.
Among the ideas being considered for the Facebook money are increasing merit pay for teachers, purchasing new computer technology, and renovating dilapidated classrooms.
The summit was sponsored by the Coalition for Effective Newark Public Schools and City Councilman Ronald Rice.
