VOLUNTEERSPRING 2012: Saturday Scholar AcademyThe Saturday Scholar Academy will serve students in 3rd through 8th grade at Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Campus. The curriculum will be inquiry-based, allowing participant students to engage in meaningful learning as they create solutions to posed dilemmas. It is this type of active learning that produces connections between the students, texts, and the world, and gives purpose to learning in the institution known as school.
Voter Registration Drive & Local ControlTaLiN seeks volunteers to assist individuals in registering to vote during NPS’s Parent Conference Day on Wed., Nov. 16th between the hours of 1pm and 7pm. Additionally, volunteers will pass out information and talk with parents about the Newark Public Schools District returning to local control.

| OPPORTUNITIESSPRING 2012: Boys and Girls Club of NewarkNow: BGCN is actively seeking volunteers/mentors to work with members at the Avon Avenue Unit.
Future: TaLiN has proposed the formation of a recreation-based, yet academically balanced, community-led afterschool program that will serve students in 3rd through 5th grade at Louise A. Spencer School and surrounding neighborhood schools, and be in partnership with the Boys and Girls Club of Newark. This will be a supervised, structured play period for kids just to be kids! And to take it further, as a community, we hope to claim our parks back for the children. This program will begin in January or February 2012. TaLiN seeks volunteers to staff this program. 8th Grade Magnet School ApplicationsNewark Public Schools offers options to its high school students through theme-based magnet schools. Several partner schools are seeking volunteers to assist current eighth grade students write their personal statements for these applications which are due in January.
Coalition for Effective Newark Public Schools Lunch Application DriveTaLiN is an organizational member of the Coalition for Effective Newark Public Schools. The Coalition is organized into goal-oriented committees that take on specific tasks. Short and long term volunteers are needed to help carry out these tasks and goals.
Lunch Application Committee seeks volunteers to assist the Coalition from Oct. 3rd to Oct. 13th at various school sites. Volunteers are needed to help parents with the online lunch application form during school and after school. Every completed lunch application means thousands of dollars for the district in federal and state aid, and that means more funding for our schools. |
