Teachers as Leaders in Newark seeks justice and equality for all students through empowering Newark educators to be catalysts in the creation of social and educational alliances. Past, present, and future educators are supported by the creation of a space to practice a philosophy of education that values democratic processes and equality both in and outside of the school building.
Established in 2008 by a former Newark Public Schools District teacher, TaLiN has been active in providing Newark educators a greater understanding of the roots of urban school and community culture in addition to promoting practices that improve the educational outcomes of students.
TaLiN affirms that the purpose of education for public schools in the Newark community must be to eliminate injustice and inequality; to accomplish this, the public schools must actively challenge race, gender, culture, and class biases.
In addition to teaching the fundamentals of literacy and mathematical computation, educators in the public schools are responsible for ensuring that the students attain critical thinking skills which will allow them to be active citizens in a democratic public sphere.
